, a christmas surprise no one wished for. a tornado caught on video as it touched down right this city center. emergency management officials say the twister left lots of damage in its wake blowing out first and second floor windows at the mobile infirmary medical center and the roof at the high school. so far no injuries or death, but wit trees and power lines down tens of thousands are without electricity. one store sent customers scrambling for cover. >> one customer looked out the window and said there's actually a tornado coming. i looked out and you could see the sparks flying and debris flying around. i got everybody together, about seven customers. everybody huddle around we need to go to the back. >> i probably hurt my baby grabbing her and huddling for protection. there was no time. >> reporter: it was a massive storm system that stretched across the nation. earlier a tornado touched down in mcneil, mississippi and several people suffered minor injuries. in texas, one near crockett decide to livestock feed store and high winds toppled trees killing a driver trying to remove another

new york city subway riders in shock. >> the victim here was caught between a train and the station and expired on the scene. >> reporter: police say 58-year-old kesu kahn was shoved in to the path of and oncoming train and was struck and killed. the driver of the train was so distraught, he had to be taken away in a wheelchair. tuesday, police apprehended a suspect for questioning. they believe he's the man seen in a heated argument with the victim on the subway platform before the violent confrontation. to identify the suspect, detectives poured over security video from area stores and took him into custody near the scene of the crime. meanwhile, haun's family and neighbors are grieving. >> feel bad to myself and to the family, you know. it is a tragedy. >> reporter: his wife was seen being comforted by priest and police detective after learning of her husband's tragic death. kirk gregory, nbc news. >>> just a horrible story. well, elsewhere president obama could name his choices for two top cabinet posts in the next two weeks. one of those jobs may very well go to a republican. s

'll keep our fingers crossed. thank you, dillon. folks outside the upstate new york city of rochester are still in shock in morning after a twisted holiday tragedy that will left two firefighters dead and two others hospitalized christmas eve. chris pallone has this one. >> reporter: a sleepy vacation community northeast of rochester, new york, is in shock after a gunman lured firefighters to a neighborhood and shot them. investigators in webster, new york, say four firpths responded to reports of a house and car on fire around 5:30 monday morning. two in a fire truck, two others in their own cars. >> it appears that it was a trap, that there was a car and a house that were engulfed in flame. >> one of the men was able to retreat to safety after being s.w.a.t. a s.w.a.t. team in an armored vehicle retrieved the other three. toe tas kaczowka and mike chiapperini were dead. police evacuated at least 30 people from the area and seven homes were damaged or destroyed. the shooter was found shot dead near the scene. police say he killed himself identified as william spengler, a man with a l

. but you can see from boston back into hartford, right down into new york city, it's all rain at this point. we did have a line of heavy thunderstorms move through new york city last night, producing torrential downpours and very gusty winds, but look at some of the snowfall totals so far. there are so many areas from new york through pennsylvania back into ohio that have already picked up a foot or more of snow. in connecticut, we picked up about six inches of snow before it did change over to rain, which it's going to stay as all rain at this point, but we do still have winter storm warnings and advisories posted, now mostly across central and northern new england, where we are still looking at additional snowfall accumulations. and look at that all across northern vermont, areas that want it, especially in the ski resorts, should pick up more than two feet of snow. the purple area is where we should see a foot or more, and areas back across massachusetts only an additional inch or so, especially inland areas where it is still all snow right now. as for wind gusts, the jersey shore, brick

to be this morning in mostly the big cities along i-95. right now winds 39 in philadelphia. 36 in scranton. you have to get in the 50-mile-per-hour range to get damaging winds. that will occur as the sun is coming up this morning around new york city, philadelphia, all of new jersey and then southern new england this afternoon. it's not pretty around chicago with winds at 40 and indianapolis at 40 and areas of snow out here. so it's a very windy day out there. not good for flying. a lot of airline delays. as far as the rain goes, the rain is in green, remember. heavy rain kicking up from philadelphia to new york city through the hudson valley, through scranton and binghamton, new york. that will be over the top of boston this afternoon. the back side of the storm has a lot of snow with it. areas in white. snowing hard in northern indiana through michigan. that snow will rotate through cleveland throughout the morning. very dangerous roads in cleveland as the colder air moves in. everything will be freezing. again, we're locked into the rain for the whole morning commute from philadelphia to new york
they made very important gains on the outskirts of the city of aleppo and the capital damascus. in aleppo they're reporting to have taken over a military base belonging to the regime and in damascus, they've taken over a military installation on the outside of that country's airport. that also links to the issue of outside support for the syrian regime, including russia which says it will stand by president bashar al assad despite comments yesterday from a senior russian official acknowledging that in fact president ais losing control of that country to the opposition. as you mentioned today, the united states sent a symbolic show of force to turkey and nato member along with the dutch government. they have now deployed patriotic missiles, a defense system that will include 400 american operators to work that system for the turkish government. lynn? >> ayman, thanks so much. >>> back here at home after taking herself out of the running as secretary of state, susan rice is keeping her eye on ball, meeting with the president at the white house today. on twitter last night, rice rallied foll
exited the new york city area, starting to exit long island, too. from new york city southward, philly, d.c., a shower today, mainly dry. but 84, the mass pike, all of this region dealing with extremely heavy rain. the temperatures are warm enough, we don't have to worry about the roads. only in new hampshire and maine will deal with snow and sleet. the next storm is on its heels. this one providing snow in areas of utah. then it heads out to the plains. these are blizzard watches in effect for areas of kansas. this is a serious storm. then this stripe of heavy snow on the backside of it through wisconsin, nebraska and iowa. these are my first updateds from my computer of how much snow we could get. not a lot in denver, but from omaha, lincoln, des moines, ames, madison, green bay, you could have 6 to 12 inches of snow possible by the time it's done thursday night. the rain this morning will be exiting. the southeast is just fine. the midwest, you have one nice day today, and then that snowstorm is coming tomorrow. 6 to 12 inches, it looks like those areas will be guaranteed a white chris
